We can build a health center for the people of San Mateo, Guatemala

For those of you who knew my mom, America Calderon, this foundation was very important to her.

We are no longer accepting donations on this campaign, but there are other ways for you to support us today!

$6,025 towards $5,000

Help us reduce illness and death among women and children of San Mateo for the Ixtatan Foundation. Donate.

The Ixtatan foundation is an organization with which my mom, America Calderon, worked closely in the last few years of her life. She spent time helping with the school it runs in San Mateo, Guatemala, and had been planning to spend a year there before she was diagnosed with Cancer. Last week, along with my brother, Camilo, I visited the town and the school and witnessed first hand the work the foundation is doing and the desperate need this community has. Right now the closest hospital is 4 hours away and the people in the town don't even have the resources to do simple blood tests. This is the kind of cause where a little money will go a long way, and it's also a great way to remember America (it was her birthday last week).

Funds raised will help build a health center with a medical and water treatment laboratory and a pharmacy. Alongside modern medical practices the center will promote the use of medicinal plants according to ancestral knowledge of the Mayan people. This will result in reduction of maternal and infant deaths in San Mateo Ixtatan, a town located in the mountains of Guatemala. I would love for you to be a part of this effort by donating or fundraising yourself.

This is the first of three campaigns that will complete the entire project; this initial phase of the campaign is designed to fund the costs of running the health center for the first year and the creation and set up of the pharmacy. We hope to have the entire center up and running by mid 2016. The laboratory has been mostly provided for by Engineers for a Sustainable World of the University of Rhode Island.
